Acton Residents Just say No

November 13th, 2007 · No Comments

The residents in the town of Acton are facing a proposed development of four buildings housing at least five restaurants on two acres at Crown Valley and Antelope Woods roads.
Acton remains a quiet village about 50 miles North of the City of Los Angeles with just over 9,000 residents. Acton residents admit they like the laid back rural atmosphere of the town. Recent years have brought more homes and businesses to the town which has a strict set of community standards.

Residents who complain that this development will not adhere to community standards are not necessarily against development, only state that it appears the builder, United Growth a San Francisco-based developer is trying to put too many businesses into the small parcel.

The developer has been meeting with the Town Council since May 2006, and has worked to alleviate residents’ concerns.
"Based on the Town Council’s suggestions, we have incorporated into our plans many elements such as Western-style architecture, horse trails, full-sized parking stalls, a chiller wastewater system, among others," said a statement from Carlos Parrague, a United Growth partner.
"We remain committed to these additions and will continue to work with all those involved to create a win-win situation."

Some residents argue that the commerce will be too close to existing homes and they would really rather not want to see a Starbucks from their front door. (Can’t blame them)

The project timeline: Los Angeles County Regional Planning Department
2006: Project submitted to regional planning
February 2007: Project gets conceptual approval
April 2007: United Growth applies for permission to have a taller sign than area rules allow.
July 2007: Del Taco with drive-through becomes the second confirmed restaurant
August 2007: Regional Planning Commission denies permission for the taller sign.
August 2007: United Growth asks to raise two of the four buildings to the maximum height of 35 feet.
August 2007: The developer has told the Planning Department to withdraw that request.
August 2007: United Growth appeals the sign denial to Los Angeles County supervisors.
