How long will Castaic wait for a High School

September 16th, 2007 · No Comments

In today’s Signal there is a Question and Answer segment featuring Jaime Castellanos Superintendent, William S. Hart Union School District.
Mr. Castellanos answered very important questions posed to him about how long does Castaic have to wait for a High School?
Castaic has been locked in a battle of the neighborhoods regarding the proposed high school location. Every body wants a high school, but not in my backyard is the common emotion by many local home owners.
Residents’ are becoming frustrated as further delays are caused by the lack of a firm site for the proposed school.

Currently the Hart District has Castaic students on a rotation type enrollment where students attend Valencia for 2 years, the on to West Ranch high for 2 years.
A local developer has been involved since 2003, SunCal Northlake, LLC. is moving through the approval process and concerns raised by the environment impact study, working with the  County on the concerns raised in the report.

There are several sites of interest by the Hart District, one in the Northlake area above the Castaic Lake, the area in Hasley Canyon, the Mesa site owned by Newhall Land and Farm, and another parcel known as the Ion property in Sloan Canyon. Inquiries have also been made to the Sterling Gateway which plans to build in the Hasley/Val Verde area.

The Hasley parcel is owned by the Hart District. There is a project by Castaic resident John Zaring in 2006 founded Castaic United to Build a School (CUBS). I’m going to do some research about Mr. Zaring and give him a call. He is on the right track in my opinion. The simple fact is Castaic has grown and the lack of a local High school is not keeping pace for the growth in the community.
