Mall Expansion Gets Approval

The Valencia Town Center has been given approval for expansion, 331,860 square feet larger, the Santa Clarita City Council voted Tuesday night to deny an appeal that had been holding up the expansion project.

Appellants Salt Creek Grille and Poquito Mas who had opposed the project, the two restaurants filed the appeal in August stating parking was an issue switched gears and announced their support of the project Tuesday, saying they will use other means to work through the long-existing parking problems that had been the subject of their appeal.

Plans for expansion include a two-story addition to the Macy’s department store, an outdoor pedestrian corridor between Macy’s and Sears, and two additional retail pads at the northwest corner of Citrus Drive and Magic Mountain Parkway.

The project will be built in two, possibly three, stages, with the first bringing in 30 to 40 upscale retail stores and restaurants and the second bringing in outdoor dining and more retail stores, according to Craig Doyle, development director for the town center. Stages one and two are expected to be completed by 2010.
