SAN DIEGO, Calif., Oct. 3 — The Slopes of Mt. Soledad in San Diego have suffered a landslide which caused severe damage, shredding a 150-foot stretch of a busy road and wrecking at least one hillside home and taking down 3 power poles which supply electricity to the area.
Estimates are that at least 46 homes on the slopes of Mt. Soledad, were ordered evacuated after the road buckled shortly before 9 a.m. Pacific time.
The street has slumped an estimated 12 feet from its former level. Apparently area residents became concerned about 2 weeks ago when large cracks began appearing in the street. Landslides and shifting soil have been an issue on Mt. Soledad since the 1960s. Michael Aguirre, the San Diego City Attorney, is quoted “This is not a new problem to the area”

On the right, a 5-inch crack has grown since mid-August outside the Soledad Mountain Road home of Brian Burke. Cracking and water-line breaks have been reported in the area.
