Work began this week on the two-lane truck bypass tunnel where 30 big rigs and one car exploded in a raging fire, three people died inside the tunnel earlier this month Oct. 12. The fire within the tunnel burned as hot as 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit, causing structural damage.
As one of the busiest section’s of highway where as many as 250,000 vehicles travel daily Caltrans has included a bonus to the firm of Security Paving Company Inc., if the work will be completed by November 15. Security Paving faces a $150,000 penalty for each day it falls behind schedule.
