Update to the story that appeard on September 20, 2007;
The little house that couldn’t! abandoned on the side of the 101 freeway since September 15, Caltrans hired Master House Movers, of Santa Clarita they began moving the house at about 10:00 p.m. Tuesday night. Caltrans spokesperson, Judy Gish is quoted as saying, "In the interest of public safety, Caltrans has taken action to remove the abandoned house… Because the owner of the home has failed to move it."
The owners of the house, Kimberly Bigman and Patrick Richardson, had plans to move the house to the Placerita Canyon area to set up a homeless shelter. There were two buildings being moved, one structure which took the route mapped out by Caltrans made it.
Cost to to move the house is expected to top out at $20,000.
Caltrans will also be billing the couple for the storage of the house for the next 30 days.
CHP has yet to review, only stating that this partcular move though permitted with Caltrans didn’t have the final inspection that is required by CHP to move large loads.
This couple certainly had the best intentions, Bigman and her partner planned to fix up the home, so homeless people would have a place to stay in the winter. I checked the parcel map for this location and it appears it is actually in Canyon Country, North of Placerita Canyon, West Sierra Highway and South of Golden Valley Road. Very close to a previous temporary winter shelter location.
Santa Clarita has long been arguing about the best location for a shelter, seems we have a need however no body wants it in their backyard. We have a winter shelter here in Santa Clarita with help from the Santa Clarita Community Development Corporation (SCCDC) it’s location has criss crossed through Santa Clarita since about 1998.
The winter shelter will Re-Open December 1, 2007 located AT 23029 Drayton Canyon Country.
